Cosplayers and cosplay contests. New cosplayers often show up at competitions with a huuuge question mark over their heads ❓
And maybe you’re on the jury, and you can read it on their faces that they have no idea what they’re really doing.
It’s time to share some information, starting right from the basics: from what we more experienced cosplayers take for granted. So let’s start addressing this topic with the most basic question we can ask ourselves: what is a cosplay contest?
A cosplay contest is an event where cosplay enthusiasts compete against each other, showcasing their skills in creating and wearing costumes inspired by characters from anime, manga, video games, movies, TV series, or other media.
🎭 During a cosplay contest, participants go on stage one at a time or in groups to showcase their costumes and often perform a short choreographed act or act out a skit involving the characters they are portraying.
⏱ These performances are usually very short, about 1–2 minutes for individuals, longer for larger groups.
🧐 The judges evaluate several aspects, including the accuracy of the costume reproduction, the resemblance to the character, the quality of craftsmanship, and the skill in portraying the character.
🏆 The winner can receive many different prizes: travel vouchers, cash prizes, or various products. All of this varies significantly depending on the size and reputation of the convention or fair hosting the cosplay contest.
