COSPLAY CONTEST (Part 2): The 7 Most Common Types

Cosplay competitions are not all the same: they differ in rules, accessibility, and inevitably, each cosplayer, depending on their own goals and preferences, will gravitate toward one type rather than another.

But what are these 7 types, and which one suits your style the best?
Find out by reading the post and let me know which is your favorite—or if you know any others—in the comments!

7️⃣ Traditional Cosplay Contest
You’ll find one at almost every comic convention with a cosplay area, and it’s the most “flexible” contest in terms of rules. Purchased or commissioned cosplays are allowed, and very often original cosplays (self-created or inspired by unofficial fan art) are also welcome.

6️⃣ “Performance Only” Contest
These contests are great for beginners! The craftsmanship of your cosplay doesn’t matter—you can buy it, commission it, or make it yourself. Only the quality of your performance will be judged! In short: have fun and entertain the audience! Acting is the key to winning.

5️⃣ Themed Contest
In this type of contest, you can only compete using cosplay from a specific series. For example, there are contests themed around League of Legends or World of Warcraft!

4️⃣ Kids Contest
Luckily, cosplay is an inclusive art, so even kids and youngsters are given the chance to express themselves on stage.

3️⃣ PRO Contest
In a PRO contest, things get serious and exciting! Usually, a preliminary selection is required, which, if passed, allows you to compete in the main contest. The cosplay must be made by yourself (or at least 70% handmade depending on the contest). This contest is mainly for veteran cosplayers, prop makers, or anyone with significant experience.

2️⃣ National Circuit
After winning a qualifying round in a smaller contest, you earn the right to compete in the final contest, where all finalists face off. There are multiple national circuits (I’ll tell you more about them in another post).

1️⃣ World, International, European Circuit
These are the most exciting and important contests: once you win your country’s qualifier, you’ll have the honor of representing Italy abroad, competing against other nations! It’s a unique experience that no other contest can give you. It requires a lot of effort and preparation: you’ll need to study technique, perfect your choreography, and choose your character based on what you want to show the judges. Strategy is key.

Here are the 7 most common types of cosplay contests. Did you know them all? Which ones have you participated in, and which were your favorites? 😊
