Have you ever wondered how to cosplay and where to begin? 🎭

In this updated beginner’s guide, you’ll learn:
• what you really need to start cosplaying,
• how to choose your first cosplay costume,
• and the most common mistakes to avoid so you can begin your cosplay journey with confidence.

What is Cosplay and Why Do Millions Love It?

The term cosplay comes from combining “costume” and “play”: it literally means portraying a character by wearing their costume. From comics to anime, from video games to movies, every universe has its iconic characters that fans choose to bring to life.

Cosplaying is not just dressing up: it means living a character, feeling part of a community, and taking part in events, conventions, and contests. You can choose to buy ready-made costumes from specialized websites, or create something unique on your own!

For example, I am a cosmaker and I love creating my costumes entirely on my own! These are some of my cosplays:

How to Cosplay: Basic Materials and Tools for Beginners

One of the first questions beginners ask when learning how to cosplay is about the costs: how much should I spend to create a costume? There’s no single answer, as it depends on several factors such as the level of detail, the materials you choose, and whether you make everything by hand or buy some parts ready-made.

  • Minimum Budget: With a budget of €50–100, you can already get started. At this cost, it’s possible to create a simple cosplay, perhaps inspired by characters with everyday or minimally elaborate outfits. You can use inexpensive materials like thin foam, basic fabrics, or repurpose clothes and accessories you already have at home. Buying second-hand items at thrift stores or online can also significantly reduce costs.
  • Intermediate-Level Cosplay: If you want a more refined costume, complete with accessories, a high-quality wig, specific makeup, and details faithful to the character, the budget typically ranges from €200 to €400. Most cosplayers attending conventions and events fall into this range: the result is visually impressive, without requiring extremely high investments.
  • Advanced or Competition-Level Cosplay: Those aiming for contests and competitions often invest much more. In this case, the budget can exceed €1,000, especially if the costume includes complex armor, large props (weapons, shields, wings), or craftsmanship techniques such as 3D printing, resin work, and professional painting. This level should be considered only after gaining experience, as it requires more time, skills, and financial resources.

💡 Tip for Beginners: You don’t need to spend large amounts to have fun. Many experienced cosplayers started with simple projects and gradually improved their skills in sewing, prop making, and makeup. Start with a manageable costume, learn from your mistakes, and level up as you gain confidence and craftsmanship.

One last important point: it’s not just about the cost, but also about effort and creativity. Sometimes a low-budget but original cosplay, made with imagination and passion, can be more successful than an expensive but impersonal one.

Basic Materials and Tools for Your First Cosplay

Before starting your first project, it’s essential to know how to cosplay using the right materials. You really only need a few basic materials to start experimenting and creating your first cosplays. You don’t need a huge investment: with the right choices, even a beginner can achieve great results.

Here are the materials that will be most useful to you:

  • EVA Foam: the most versatile material for armor, accessories, and costume details. It comes in various thicknesses and colors, and is lightweight and easy to shape and craft.
  • Contact Cement: essential for gluing EVA foam securely and durably. It’s much more reliable than hot glue and ensures clean, strong bonds.
  • Simple Fabrics: cotton, polyester, or other affordable fabrics that you can find at markets or fabric stores. Ideal for basic outfits or costume parts that don’t require complex construction.
  • Acrylic Paints: perfect for painting EVA foam and creating realistic effects.
  • Primers or Sealants: essential for preparing the surface before painting and making it more durable.
  • Synthetic Wigs: not essential for your very first projects, but they make a big difference if you want to look more like the character.

With this minimum set of materials, you can already start creating your first cosplays without too much difficulty and without spending large amounts.

How to Cosplay and Enjoy Conventions

Attending conventions is one of the best ways to learn how to cosplay and improve your costume while experiencing the community. Events focused on comics, anime, video games, and pop culture are the perfect opportunity to meet other cosplayers, take photos, learn new techniques, and most importantly, have fun with people who share the same passion.

The most well-known and popular conventions are:

  • Lucca Comics & Games → the largest convention in Europe, gathering hundreds of thousands of fans every year. It’s the ultimate event if you love cosplay and want to have a unique experience.
  • Comic-Con International (San Diego) → the most famous comic and pop culture convention in the world, offering unparalleled opportunities to see amazing cosplays, meet fellow cosplayers, and attend panels.
  • Japan Expo (Paris) → one of the largest cosplay and anime conventions in Europe, attracting thousands of cosplayers every year with contests, workshops, and a vibrant community.
  • Anime Expo (Los Angeles) → a major anime and cosplay event in the United States, known for its cosplay competitions, workshops, and photo opportunities with fans and professionals alike.

Besides these major events, practically every area near you hosts smaller, but equally fun, conventions. These are often the best places to start: less crowded, more intimate, and perfect for making new friends within the cosplay community.

💡 Tip: Attending conventions doesn’t just mean showing off your costume; it’s also a chance to connect with other cosplayers, discover new materials, attend workshops, and maybe find inspiration for your next project.

4 Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your First Cosplay

When approaching the world of cosplay, it’s normal to make some mistakes, especially as a beginner. Knowing them in advance will help you save time, money, and frustration, and let you enjoy the experience more. So, if you’ve just started learning how to cosplay, avoid these 4 common mistakes:

  • Choosing projects that are too difficult → This is a trap many beginners fall into: immediately falling in love with a character that has huge armor or an ultra-detailed costume. The risk? Getting discouraged, not finishing it, and abandoning the idea. It’s better to start with a simple cosplay that allows you to learn the basics and enjoy the satisfaction of wearing it at a convention.
  • Not planning your time → A cosplay isn’t made in a weekend. Depending on its complexity, it can take weeks or even months to complete. If you aim to wear it at a convention, carefully plan each stage: material research, sewing, construction, painting, and dress rehearsals. Without a timeline, you risk arriving at the event with an unfinished costume.
  • Using the wrong materials → The right materials really make a difference. If you use fabric that’s too heavy, foam that’s too thin, or inadequate adhesives, the final result can be fragile, uncomfortable, or unappealing. Do your research before starting: follow my tutorials or check out my book My Cosplay LAB, where I guide you step by step in choosing materials and learning basic techniques.
  • Neglecting makeup and wigs → Many beginners focus only on the costume, forgetting that makeup and wigs make up almost half of the final result. A high-quality wig and even simple but consistent makeup can completely transform your cosplay, making it recognizable and impactful. Don’t underestimate these details!

💡 Extra Tip: Making mistakes is normal! Every cosplay you create will teach you something new. The important thing is not to let mistakes hold you back, but to use them as opportunities to improve.
